MEET KATIE

I started my pottery journey in 2020, sitting at my coffee table with air-dry clay, making small gifts and mementos. In 2023, after moving to Portland, OR, I took a class at a local studio to meet new people, and I quickly fell in love with the craft. Once the course ended, I bought a $200 wheel online and set up a small workspace in my garage. Over time, my setup has grown to take up most of my garage space, piece by piece!

As an artist with ADHD and a chronic pain condition, I’ve learned that my creative process often takes me down unexpected paths. The way my mind and body work together shapes my pottery, making each piece a reflection of my unique experience. My ADHD gives me the freedom to experiment, jump between techniques, and explore new ideas on a whim, while living with chronic pain helps me slow down and truly appreciate the meditative, tactile nature of working with clay. These experiences make me a more intuitive and flexible artist, always embracing the unpredictable beauty of the process.

Over the past year and a half, I’ve explored different aspects of pottery based on whatever catches my interest that day. I’m still developing my style, and that sense of discovery keeps the process exciting. By day, I work as a therapist in the mental health field. After spending hours in deep emotional work, creating with my hands brings a much-needed sense of balance. Most days, you’ll find me in my garage-turned-workshop—shaping clay, working on a new project for the 107-year-old house I share with my husband and our four pets, or throwing the ball for my dog, BMO… for the ninth time that day!
